Happy Spring! Are you looking for a way to celebrate Earth Day with your speech and language students? This packet was developed to use with a variety of students in k-4th grade. The packet includes a book and interactive book for teaching about recycling. Follow up with a activity that targets describing!
Read the recycling book (pages 3-7) with your students. Discuss key vocabulary and their knowledge of recycling. Use the second book set as an interactive version (pages 8-14). Add velcro to the images and allow your students to attach them on the correct page of the story.
Now that you have built background knowledge and schema for recycling, complete the describing activity (pages 15-22). Student will describe waste items and then sort them into the correct container. Give each student a sorting mat. Use the describing poster and student strips to support your student’s ability to describe the waste item. On each student’s turn, have him/her describe one waste item found on the card. Then sort it into the correction recycle container on the sorting mat. Blank cards are included for other relevant items specific to your student.
Use the enclosed homework sheets (pages 23-24) for extra practice.
Use the included coloring pages (pages 25-29) as activity sheets for your group members to keep busy while others are working.
