A fundamental element of teaching is building upon our students' prior knowledge. In order to do this, I always make sure to access my students' schema before beginning a new topic. This journal assignment is a great "seed-writing" activity for students to share with you what they already know about reducing, reusing, and recycling. The assignment includes a graphic organizer for students to brainstorm their prior knowledge, writing space for a detailed journal, and an area for students to illustrate their narrative. I tend to give this journal as a weekend writing assignment with the hope that it will also encourage my students' families to look up information about going green.
