This lesson plan is a project-based lesson plan that teaches students about growing food. There is a vocabulary list that can be adjusted for grade levels if needed. The vocabulary list is designed to be done whole class, individually or in small groups. You will need small cups, Dixie type cups work well, soil and vegetable or fruit seeds, notebook or copy paper, and pencils or crayons. The lesson plan requires students to feel the seeds and soil so they will get a little messy. If working with PreK or Kindergarten students this project can easily be turned into a whole class project by placing soil into a large tub, bucket or bowl and having the students explore it outside or in the science center. You can do the same with the seeds. This project can be separated into a few days or worked into an hour. For a lesson that you want to take a few days complete the Engagement and Exploration sections and give the students the vocabulary words. Day 2 complete the Exploration sections. Day 3 complete the Elaboration and Evaluation sections.
