Ways to Help the Earth Foldable
Taking Care of the Earth Foldable
I just love this unit because it’s a great Common Core review, but it also hits some really key Earth Day concepts that are geared for 4th and 5th graders. It’s not too heavy handed but still gets the point across that it’s up to us to help take care of the Earth. Plus, I really think all of these topics are ones that the kids will enjoy. When kids are engaged, chances are…they'll learn a lot too!
I really like the worksheets included in this set. Each one is a hand selected, researched, and original piece that is focused on key Common Core concepts but have ecology concepts embedded in them. Great way to hit some science topics while doing language arts.
The task card set has 32 task cards and focuses on Informational Text Structures. Students read a short description (Earth Day themed of course) and are then asked, if they were to write about this topic, which text structure would be the best to use. The task cards can be used in learning stations, for small groups, one on one, for fast finishers, as a whole class, or my favorite way, as a non-timed Scoot game (place cards around the room and kids travel from card to card with their record sheets to complete). These task cards are super fun and they promote higher level thinking.
The opinion piece/persuasive writing materials will help your students write a five paragraph essay. The Earth Day Topic List is nice and broad and is a great starting point. There are two outline pages to choose from and both follow the Step Up to Writing format, although they can be used regardless of the writing program you use. Writing pages are also included to make the students work look sharp!
Poetry is always fun to incorporate throughout the year. Even kids who don't like to write, usually like writing poems. This set has two different types of poems with directions and examples for each. The first one is a Haiku poem, which is a poetry form from Japan that centers around nature (perfect for Earth Day). These would be so pretty displayed on a bulletin board next to your student’s artwork…maybe watercolored scenes of nature. The other poem is a shape poem. Kids can choose something from nature to draw and then write the poem either inside or around that shape. Everyone can be successful with this one!
I am crazy about this Earth Day unit and am so excited to share it with you. It has some of my favorite things for the classroom: a variety of activities, rigorous content, and fun! I hope that you enjoy this literacy set as much as I do.
