Fifth and sixth grade students review fractions and decimals while solving real-world word problems. This packet has an earth day theme to engage students in solving math problems that involve recycling and earth friendly practices including gardening. This makes a great packet for students to review fractions and decimals before state testing while having fun.

These challenging, real-world problems will keep your students engaged while setting expectations for rigor in your classroom. Skills students will apply include operations of large numbers, decimals and fractions. This packet makes a great review before testing while keeping students engaged!

Designed as a project for demonstrating students’ deep understanding of essential 4th and 5th grade standards will provide fifth grade teachers with valuable information about your students’ readiness and students that may be advanced.

Sixth grade teachers will find that the problems involve deep understanding of essential skills your students may need to review. Use this packet to spiral back to place value, decimals and fractions.

Students often are frustrated with the number of beginning-of-the-year assessments and yet we need that early information to guide our teaching. We created this resource to provide you with data while engaging students in a high-interest theme of earth friendly recycling and gardening.

This packet will also provide you with valuable information as to the perseverance your students have previously built as mathematicians.

Possible Uses in the Classroom

Providing students with a packet is a great way for students to work at her own pace, and differentiation will come naturally, providing you with the opportunity to do daily one-on-one and small group teaching, while the rest of the class happily engages in the project.

This makes an excellent packet for earlier finishers, as well as, for home school students of various ages or grades.

You may wish to have students work individually, in pairs or in small groups. Here are just a few ideas:

Pre-assessment
Compacting curriculum
Math centers or stations
As early finisher work or enrichment
for an independent small group
For home school study

Express a fraction with denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with denominator 100, and use this technique to add two fractions with respective denominators 10 and 100. For example, express 3/10 as 30/100, and add 3/10 + 4/100 = 34/100.
Apply and extend previous understandings of division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
