Teach With Me

Here’s a versatile Earth Day activity that will practice 2D shapes, plus writing and following direction skills, along with learning about pollution & the importance of giving a hoot. If your students are like mine, they will absolutely love their completed owl.

Teacher Comments:

  • “Great product!”
  • “Super fun!”
  • “Loved this!”

There are several options for this Earth Day “Give a Hoot! Don’t Pollute” craftivity.

I do this as a whole-group “listening & following spatial directions” activity, so we do the “place & glue” version, reviewing all of the 2D shapes as we pick them up and glue them to our picture.

My Y5s really enjoy making this and are super-proud of their results. As we work, I have them try and guess what animal we are making.

Teacher Comment:

  • “My students really enjoyed this. We used them for Earth Week but we also kept them up afterwards.”

Parent volunteers cut things out at home for me, so I send the supplies with a child a week ahead of time. This expedites things, as my kiddos only have to cut the owl’s body out.

The heart and hexagon, as well as the rectangular “eye section” are all optional. You decide how many shapes you want to review.

The other version is the shapely owl on a worksheet. Simply run off on tan construction paper for children to color and trim.

After everyone is done, we discuss what pollution is and why we should give a hoot about it.

Older students can write their thoughts out on the owl worksheet (2 options) then glue it to the back.

For some 3D pizzazz, cut the beaks on a fold so they flip up, and fold the wings in half. (Photo in PREVIEW).

Punch a hole at the top, tie a yarn loop, and suspend from the ceiling.

I’ve also included an “I give a hoot! I don’t pollute” bookmark in color, plus black & white.

I’m Diane from Teach With Me, hoping your kiddos enjoy making “Hootie” as much as mine do.
