Get all three of my Earth Day Writing and Comprehension Booklets in one bundle to use within your class! This is a wonderful way for you to differentiate your students by their learning levels!
Everyone loves to read "The Lorax" during this time of year so why not incorporate a challenging ELA component to one of your favorite read alouds? Last year this activity became one of my favorite teaching moments thus far. My students loved the graphics and activities within the booklet, and I loved watching their excitement grow as they worked cooperatively with their groups to research facts and information about their Earth Day topic! Students used their booklets to record notes in their guided outline. I was able to facilitate the lesson, while they took ownership of their learning. It was phenomenal! These guided notes made the writing process so much smoother for my students as they drafted their persuasive writing pieces.
In this bundle you will find 3 differentiated writing and comprehension books to incorporate in your classroom! They are differentiated to meet the abilities of the various learners in your class! Each booklet contains the same components, however each section is modified to meet the learning levels of your students. Each booklet has a different writing topic including:
Alternative Energy Resources (Above Level - 4th grade )
Reduce-Reuse-Recycle (On Level - 3rd grade)
Community Clean Ups (Approaching Level - 2nd - 3rd grade
With each booklet, you will be able to provide your students with:
Phonics Practice (Silent Consonant Blends)
- Download my free Prezi for the phonics words and vocabulary!
Cause and Effect Skills
Two Short Responses (Point of View & Analysis)
Grammar (Quotation Marks)
Persuasive writing (OREO Organizer & Guided Note Outline)
Rubric for grading
Student Self-Check Assessment
The persuasive writing component includes a five paragraph-writing outline that is PHENOMENAL for guiding students as they work collaboratively within groups to collect information from resources such as informational books, encyclopedias, news articles, and reliable websites. I spend at least two lessons using this time to sticky note and collect information from various resources that we then record in our writing books.
In this booklet, students can work together to research information about reducing, reusing, and recycling. Then, students can use this information to create a persuasive essay convincing readers to incorporate their Earth preservation methods into readers’ everyday lives!
I have also included a final draft template for your students that pairs well with a hands on activity in which students can then create their own Lorax holding a marbled Earth designed from shaving cream and food coloring! See the pictures in the preview for ideas!
