This is a great lesson that covers almost every aspect of the Earth, Moon, and Sun Relationship. From what the Earth's axis is to how seasons are determined, this station activity will keep students engaged from the start! This is a full and comprehensive lesson including all of the teacher materials as well as the student packet. The teacher materials are great for printing using a color printer and laminating but that is not a necessity. Each station is clearly labelled and contains instructions and materials needed to complete each task. The stations included are:
Read It- Students read a passage about the movement of the Earth, Moon and Sun, and answer questions.
Explore It - Students are given materials (a globe and a flashlight) and asked to explore the Sun and Moon positions. They then draw their set-up in their packet.
Match It - Students are presented with vocabulary words, definitions, pictures, and facts and have to match them up. Vocabulary words include:
axis, rotation, revolution, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, Equator, Season, Winter, Summer, Spring, Fall, Calender, One Year, One Day/Night.
Write It - Students are presented with a scenario dealing with a season and have to write their ideas.
Interpret It - Students used their skills to interpret a diagram based on sunrise and sunset.
Apply It - Students use what they know about the movement of the Earth to complete a drawing.
Tech It - Students use the phet online lab simulator (a free resource!) and answer questions in the student packet. The “Tech It” station is possible though https://phet.colorado.edu. This online interactive lab simulator is free. Infer It - Students use their inference skills to describe light intensity.
Compare It - Students will compare the position of the Earth in different seasons and explain.
Grade It - This station is done by every student after all the other stations are completed. This allows a student to reflect on his or her learning and assign themselves a great for each station. A GREAT tool to let students justify themselves!
This can also be used in pieces as each station can be independent of the others!
Along with all of the signs, instructions, and task cards for student use at the stations you are also getting a 4 page student packet for the students to record their answers and give them guidance through the stations. This is a great lesson as it is both inquiry and prior knowledge based.
