Help your students think critically about how the Earth, Sun, and Moon impact our daily lives! This hands-on manipulative requires students to identify components of the Sun-Earth-Moon system and explain how the components interact with one another and how their movements impact phenomenon on Earth. Using this colorful, clear game board, students will work collaboratively to label all components and conceptualize what takes place in the Sun-Earth-Moon system. Students have the opportunity to practice the game multiple times until they attain mastery of the basic concepts of the Sun-Earth-Moon system and rotation and revolution. The student assessment page allows each student to individually demonstrate their knowledge of how the key components interact with one another and how rotation and revolution affects us on Earth. This download is a comprehensive, engaging set of activities designed to help students be able to fully explain these challenging concepts.

Big Idea: Our everyday life on Earth is dependent on our relationship with the sun and moon. The interactions between Earth, sun, and moon dictate many cycles we experience, such as day-night cycle, seasons, and the lunar cycle. • ESS1.B: Earth and the Solar System

o This model of the solar system can explain eclipses of the Sun and the moon. Earth’s spin axis is fixed in direction over the short-term but tilted relative to its orbit around the Sun. The seasons are a result of that tilt and are caused by the differential intensity of sunlight on different areas of Earth across the year (MS-ESS1-1)

• ESS1.B: Earth and the Solar System

o The orbits of Earth around the Sun and of the moon around Earth, together with the rotation of Earth about an axis between its North and South poles, cause observable patterns. These include day and night; daily changes in the length and direction of shadows; and different positions of the Sun, moon, and stars at different times of the day, month, and year. (5-ESS1-2)

3.3C – TSIET represent the natural world using models such as volcanoes or Sun, Earth, and Moon system and identify their limitations, including size, properties, and materials;

5.8CD – TSIET demonstrate that Earth rotates on its axis once approximately every 24 hours causing the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky; and compare the physical characteristics of the Sun, Earth, and Moon.

8.7A – TSIET model and illustrate how the tilted Earth rotates on its axis, causing day and night, and revolves around the Sun causing changes in seasons;
