This informational reading topic is a great supplement to the NGSS Earth Science Unit for 1st grade. Expository reading is one of the most challenging types of reading for young readers. 2 different levels of the informational reading are included with this product. The first is a picture booklet with short sentences. The second version is for stronger readers and includes more sentences and more challenging vocabulary. These high interest readings engage students while giving them exposure to informational reading.
Included in this download is a pre-reading sheet, including vocabulary words and a chance to discuss the topic before reading.
With first graders, you can do this as a center, or as a whole class. After the article, there is a question page that can be used as an assessment.
Specifically, this reading activity addresses Next Generation Science Standard 1-PS4-1: Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.
