Product Description

This game is a great way to review important vocabulary and content-related concepts.

My students and I LOVE playing this Pictography Review game. If you are familiar with Pictionary, it’s played very similarly. This game covers 4 Earth Science Topics: The Rock Cycle, Astronomy, Earth's Oceans, and Meteorology.

Game cards are editable, and blank cards are included.

Prior to Playing:

  • Print out the game cards and put them into stacks based on their color. The cards are editable, so you can add/change words at your discretion. I have color coded the cards, so you can just print them using a color printer. However, I prefer to print them on different colored card stock and then laminate them so they last.
  • Print out and fold/tape the die if you do not have an actual die for students to use.
  • Pull up the game board on the SmartBoard.
  • Divide students into teams.
  • Provide each with ample scratch paper and pencils.

Rules for Play:

This game is led by the teacher and is not intended for students to play unsupervised. In my experience, if students are not monitored and left to their own devices, cheating often arises.

1. Divide students in to teams of 3-4. Teams should group together. Teams should be spread out—but still in locations that allow the teacher to monitor game play.

2. Allow each team to choose a colored star to place on START.

3. Each team pics and sends up their first drawer.

4. Because everyone is on START and START is purple, the teacher will draw a purple card (Meteorology) first. The drawers are shown the prompt, and they return to their teams to draw.

5. When the teacher says “GO” drawers begin drawing the prompt on the scratch paper. Drawers are not allowed to speak, use numbers, use letters, or pantomime. As the student draws, their teammates guess the word. Whichever team guesses the word first, wins the chance to roll. (Allow students up to two minutes to draw. If no one can guess the word in two minutes, call time and choose another card. I use the timer on my phone for this.)

6. Whichever team wins, rolls the die and moves their piece. Whichever color they land on, draw that card and call each team’s drawers up to look at the prompt. Then repeat step 5.

7. For a team to win the entire game, they must successfully answer a purple draw, as the game’s finish square, is purple.
