Curriculum guide for Earth Science course as well as student "I Can Statements" or "Keeping Track of my Learning" Pages for each unit.
-Big Ideas/Essential Understandings
-Necessary student knowledge (learning objectives)
-Suggested content or activities
-Common associated Tier 2 vocabulary terms for the course.
- Student language "I Can Statements"
- Vocabulary lists for each unit, with space for students to record definitions and information
-For those in New York State, it also includes portions that outline which sections of the Earth Science Reference Table and Lab Practical can be reinforced within that unit, and which NYS standards are aligned.
I use this curriculum document as I am planning both the pacing for the year, and each unit. I plan by looking at the necessary student knowledge, vocabulary, and using the essential questions to make the content more relevant to students.
The student language objectives help students to be more focused on what they should be learning, and more motivated to fill in gaps in their knowledge.
These "I Can Statements" or "Keeping Track of my Learning" Pages for each unit have completely changed my class! They are specific objectives, written in first person, student-friendly language. They also include a list of suggested vocabulary for that unit assessment. Students can rate how they are doing on each one on a descriptive scale. They can then use these to guide their studying, ask questions, etc. I sometimes use them at the start of a unit, midway through, or at the end as a starting point to focus their review.
Each objective is based on standards and performance indicators. These are includes for all units in Earth Science.
On my course evaluations many of my past students said this was one of the things that helped them the most!
