This PowerPoint slide show teaches the student the step by step process of interpreting the Properties of Common Minerals diagram in the New York State Earth Science Reference Tables. Many photographs of minerals are used to teach the student to distinguish cleavage from fracture and to distinguish metallic from non-metallic luster. Also referenced in this slide show is the chart for Average Chemical Composition- specifically as it pertains to the earth's crust. The slide show concludes with sample Regents questions. These final slides show the student how to use the reference table to find the correct answer to the question.
