This is a cross-curricular study that focuses on reading comprehension, compare and contrast writing, and our solar system. Students will read and analyze a text about Earth and its closest neighbor, our Moon. They will answer comprehension questions to assess their understanding of the passage and answer short response questions using the acronym R.A.F.T.
R-restate the question
A-answer the question
F-For example (include details from the text)
T-This shows (restate the question)
This packet also includes a graphic organizer page (double bubble) where they can use details from the text to compare and contrast the characteristics of Earth and Moon. There is also a planning page so that students can organize their rough drafts and then compose an expository essay that compares and contrasts Earth and Moon based on the details from the text. I had my students type their final copies and I have included a rubric that thoroughly explains what students are expected to do with their writing.
