50% off for first 20 buyers - This hands on earth and space unit supports 3.E.1 of the NC Essential Standards, but it is a well-rounded, fun and engaging, unit on light, shadows, Earth and space! (I added some important concepts as I thought the NC standard was lacking.) Thus unit includes a virtual option. Please look at the preview to see EVERYTHING this unit includes.

I'm in charge of teaching my team's math and science and math comes first, so I need my science to be informative, fun, and not take too long on writing the information down. I love all of the foldable stuff, but it takes too long for my students. I would rather them be spending that time on a neat science activity than folding, cutting, coloring, and gluing. I found a way for the students to still be accountable, but not take much time to get the learned information down. Plus, my students' notebooks still look awesome at the end of the year - maybe just not as cutesy!

This unit includes a lot of opportunities for fun, hands-on activities! Students get to experiment with light and shadows, use art to make two different models, create the solar system using a scale model, create an astronaut spacecraft for re-entry, and more. Check out the preview to see more in detail.

The unit test comes in a paper and a Google Forms version for automatic grading!

I also included a fun, semi-interactive (not SmartBoard but student interactive) PowerPoint for students to participate in at the end of the unit. It is a fun way to wrap up the unit that the kids love!! Check out the preview to see more in detail.

In this Earth and space unit, students will:

•Experiment with mirrors and reflection of light

•See which colors absorb the most light/heat and which colors don’t

•Experiment with shadows in the classroom and see how their own shadows change outside throughout the day

•See why day and night occur

•Make a model to see how the tilt of our planet causes seasons as it revolves

•Make a working model of how our planet and moon move in relation to the sun and how lunar and solar eclipses occur (shadows)

•Compare each planet’s rotation, revolution, size, and moons

•Make a scale model to see the distances between each planet

•Take notes on an interesting fact for each planet and color its appearance

•Figure out their cosmic address

•Make a spacecraft to keep an astronaut safe on re-entry

•Watch Videos

•Learn and Have Fun!

In this Earth and space unit, students will learn:

•Vocabulary relative to this unit

•How light travels and how it is either reflected or absorbed

•Light energy is converted to heat energy

•Shadows are from an object blocking light and why our shadows change outside

•What causes day and night and why sunrises and sunsets occur

•The difference between rotation and revolution and what holds everything in our solar system

•What causes the seasons

•How the Earth and moon move in relation to the sun

•About lunar and solar eclipses

•Learn a lot about the different planets in our solar system

•Learn how our universe is structured

•Learn how astronauts return safely to planet Earth after being in space

This Earth and space unit includes:

•Detailed Lesson Plans - 11 lessons; 14 to 18 sessions

•All Student Sheets (PDF, editable, and Google)

•PowerPoint that accompanies lesson 8

•2 Vocab Quizzes (PDF, editable, and Google)

•2 Study Guides for the Unit Test (Easier and harder version - PDF, editable)
