This interactive Smartboard file outlines the steps of an experiment. Students are challenged to create their own earthquake proof structure. The students are awarded for extra points for the height and levels of their structure.
It is designed for teachers who are interested increasing the amount of STEM lessons in their classroom and limiting their photocopying. (No photocopying required)
This experiment does require the teacher to purchase the items needed for the experiment: aluminum trays, jelly, match sticks and marshmallows.
The Notebook includes a planning and reflection page for students to outline their thinking, therefore teachers can identify whether their students have surface level thinking or deep thinking during their inquiry based learning experiment.
There is one link to a TED Ed You Tube clip in the Notebook for students to explore why buildings fall in earthquakes before they complete the planning stage.
There are 7 pages included in the Notebook. All text is editable to suit the changes made in the experiment needed by each teacher.
You can find a video of the Notebook pages on my Instagram page. @missedsersclassroom
