This powerpoint contains pictures of a small wooden structure and sugar cube structure that I use while teaching my engineering unit in Earth Science. As we draw to a close on our earthquake unit, we discuss the pressures an earthquake apply on man-made structures and the engineering behind buildings that are built to withstand earthquake forces. These pictures I use after discussing the earthquake pressures prior to teaching the engineering piece. Students are able to see the structures before and after. I use the prompts on various slides in this powerpoint to allow students to respond either verbally or written to the ideas presented. This opens to door for us to move into the engineering behind the buildings and ending with the students designing and building their own wooden or sugar cube house to be tested at school using our shake tables.
