Earthquake! One amazing resource covering TWO NGSS standards! Students will enjoy this fun and engaging resource all about earthquakes which is broken down into two different parts. Print and go with very little prep makes this NGSS standard a breeze!

Part 1 - Students use the packet for guided research:

Research topics include:

  • What causes an earthquake
  • What to do during an earthquake
  • How are buildings designed to withstand an earthquake
  • research a famous earthquake in history

After students conduct their research, whole class lesson on the Richter scale. Students use the Richter scale with descriptions to create a colorful poster of each category on the scale.

Part 2 - Students then form pairs to complete an engineering design challenge: to make an earthquake resistant building! Easy to follow packet with each step of the engineering design process clearly laid out. After challenge is complete, students collect data from each other to determine the most successful design.

Answer keys for all questions as well as a rubric for easy grading included!

Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans. Examples of solutions could include designing an earthquake resistant building and improving monitoring of volcanic activity. Assessment is limited to earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.
