A fun activity to incorporate into any unit about earthquakes, this project challenges students to plan, build, and test their own building. Includes guidelines (must be at least 9 inches tall, withstand an earthquake for 10 seconds, etc.), materials (50 toothpicks, 50 marshmallows, ruler), and step by step directions.
Students must first plan with their group, sketching out what the building will look like and what each person's job will be in the group.
Student's test out their building by placing it in a pan of jell-o and shaking it for 10 seconds.
There are three reflection questions at the end for answering in notebooks and for groups that finish early, a chart telling student's how to find the cost of building their structure if it were real.
