Description

Want to learn about Earth's crust, including Earth's layers, tectonic plates, Alfred Wegener, continental drift, Pangea, how and why earthquakes happen, how mountains are formed, and types of volcanoes? Wow, that sounds like a lot, but after you read some great picture books you can solidify learning on these topics by adding some hands-on teaching ideas, activities, and worksheets.

Activities include

  • a full interactive notebook (aka lapbook) on the subjects mentioned
  • optional worksheets
  • painting the Earth’s layers, plus a demonstration (how is the Earth's crust like a peach)
  • mapping tectonic plates (outdoor physical activity)
  • putting together a Pangea puzzle and timeline
  • demonstrating earthquakes and mountains using pudding and crackers
  • erupting a volcano (both cindercone and shield volcanoes)
  • learning about historic volcanic eruptions, including Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Vesuvius, Krakatoa, and more
  • a trivia-based review game
