Aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards, this PowerPoint specifically addresses NGSS standard 4-ESS1-1: Identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to support an explanation for changes in a landscape over time, as well as NGSS standard 4-ESS2-2: Analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth’s features.
This product could also be used to address some of the middle school Earth Science standards, specifically MS-ESS2-2 and MS-ESS2-3.
The PowerPoint begins with the classification of rocks and the rock cycle. This is followed by slides on plate tectonics, including the Theory of Pangaea, the Ring of Fire, volcanoes and earthquakes. There are links to videos and interactive web sites embedded in the slides. Notes are also included for the teacher on most of the slides. Finally, a printable page for students to record notes is included.
Ideally, combining this product with hands on activities like the ones found in my Earth's Crust and The Rock Cycle unit would be best for developing a strong conceptual understanding of Earth's Crust and the Rock Cycle.
If you are not using NGSS, this product is appropriate for grades 3-6.
