This resource is designed to complement my Four Spheres Informational Text Bundle. The purpose of this resource is for students to record what they know and wonder about each sphere before learning about it by reading the informational text. After reading, they fill in what they learned. In addition, there is an activity which allows students to explore the ways in which the four spheres interact. This aligns with the 5th grade NGSS standard 5-ESS2-1. The standard states that students should be able to describe ways the four spheres interact.
What's included: Resource description/instructions, placemat notes, Earth graphics, ”System Interactions” activity, and an Answer Key.
I recommend printing one placemat (8.5"x14") per kid that has the notes page on one side and the System Interactions page on the other side. Each kid will only need one Earth graphic (optional). I’ve included two styles for you to choose from. There are photos included in the resource to show how the activities might look after completion.
The way I teach the four spheres is by putting students into "expert groups". Each group only studies one sphere. They read the accompanying article from my bundle, Four Spheres GROWING BUNDLE: Geosphere, Biosphere, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, and create a poster with important information from the article and a drawing. Then, each group presents to the class. Before each presentation, I have all students fill in the K & W (know & want to know) parts of the placemat notes. During/after the presentation, I have all students fill in the L (learned) part of the notes. Once everyone has presented, students work in teams to complete the back side of the notes (Systems Interactions). Of course, I will model one or two connections before having them finish on their own.
