The activities in this package can be implemented in whole group during an Earth’s Systems unit, in small group science stations, or during your literacy block in literacy stations. These project-based science stations will have your students exploring Earth’s 4 spheres to read and answer questions, conduct experiments, review vocabulary, play vocabulary games, conduct research projects, and explore the systems in Earth’s spheres through technology.
This Package Includes:
Reading Station: Provide books and Internet documents with copies of 16 graphic organizers. Organizers can also be used as note-takers in your whole group instruction. READING PASSAGES ARE ALSO INCLUDED!
Topics For Organizers:
Vocabulary Station: 26 terms and definitions are included in chart form for students to practice and glue in their notebooks. All 26 terms (Earth’s 4 spheres) are included in an Earth’s Systems Fiddle Strips! game. Prepare the game according to instructions for vocabulary fun!
Explore Science: 6 labs (soil, geologic formations, hydrologic cycle, ocean waves, and contraction and expansion) are included with materials lists and a lab form. Students could record lab results on their lab sheets or directly in their science notebooks. Lab sheets could also be completed and glued in their science notebooks.
Computer Station: 7 websites are listed (and hyperlinked) for students to visit. Videos and video quizzes are included on some of the sites. 4 website recording sheets are included for note taking and accountability. One lab card has hyperlinks, the other does not.
Research Station: Students will record their research in a Marine Biome Fact File when investigating the affects marine biomes have on Earth. These make great resources to keep in the classroom for future reference! Students will analyze 10 photographs and explain scientific observations in relation to the interaction of Earth’s 4 spheres.
6 Biome Poster templates: freshwater biome, rainforest biome, forest biome, tundra biome, savanna biome, and desert biome. These make great decoration or can be bound in a class book!
These activities are interactive and will keep students engaged throughout your Earth’s Systems science unit! All activities and projects are designed and aligned to meet the 5th Grade Next Generation Science Standards.
