Bring science to life in your classroom with this activity! This lab can be done with younger students as a basic lesson in observation, or can be done with older students as part of a discussion on decomposers.
Lab directions: Each group of students will need one earthworm (nightcrawler earthworms can be bought in the sporting goods section at Walmart), a paper plate (or science tray) containing equal parts of rock gravel, leaves, and soil, and a cup of water with an eye-dropper in it. Students will complete the three parts of the lab sheet by first making observations about the three materials on their science tray, then requesting a worm from the teacher and observing it, lastly students each get to sprinkle one dropper-full of water next to the worm to see how it reacts. At the end of the activity students should write what they learned about earthworms.
