Easter Activities: Onset Rime Level 1:
Eggs and Baskets Literacy Center Activities

★ Onset Rime DIBELS – Match each Easter Egg to an Easter Basket to make a word…

★ Real or Nonsense? C-V-C Prints nicely in color or grayscale.

★ 21 Page Download - 3 Ways to Play

★ 24 different Easter Eggs with onsets (beginning sounds and digraphs) match up to a variety of Easter Baskets with rimes (–at, -ip, um, ed, ot, etc.).

★ Optional Easter themed recording sheets for students to write the cvc onset rime words they form.

COMMON CORE:
Phonological Awareness
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.2c Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words.
Phonics and Word Recognition
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.3b Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.

Play as a simple pick an Easter Egg and match it to an Easter Basket with a rime that forms a word. OR play “Real or Nonsense?”

Easter Egg onset cards can be placed in an empty Easter Basket if you have one in your classroom.

I have a Level 2 Version that you can find in my products listings. It can be added to set one gradually to make the activity more difficult and differentiate students’ practice. The sets are meant to be integrated.

These directions are for printing the Easter Egg cards with onsets, back to back so they look appealing when placed face down. OR You can simply print the file as is, and leave the back sides of the Easter Egg onset cards plain, OR you can glue the Easter graphic backings onto the cards.

Print pages 1 and 2 (these directions and TpT seller information).
Print page 3 – Easter Eggs with onsets (beginning consonants and digraphs)
Place page 3 in the printer’s paper tray face up and facing you.
Print page 4, and the reverse images of the Easter Eggs will print out on the back.
Print page 5 – more Easter Eggs with onsets
Place page 5 back in the printer’s paper tray face up and facing you.
Print page 6, and the reverse images of the Easter Eggs will print out on the back.

Print pages 7-22. Pages 7-13 are Easter Basket gameboards with rimes on them.
5 of the Easter Basket gameboards each have 6 rimes sorted by vowels. I have also made 2 Easter Basket gameboards with 12 rimes and mixed vowels for more advanced students. Print as many of each Easter Basket gameboard as needed.

Pages 14 - 19 are the optional Easter recording sheets in 2 sizes. One sheet is for students to record the real cvc words they build. The other one is for the second way to use this activity where the students decide if a word is real or nonsense. The Easter recording sheets are in color if you’d like to laminate them and have students write in erasable markers as they play the games and in black and white for students to write on with pencil and then color.

Pages 20 and 21 contain 2 Easter themed Amazing Word Builder Awards in color and black and white for students to color.

To Play:
Place Easter Egg cards face down, perhaps in an Easter Basket if you have one. Players take turns picking an Easter Egg onset card from the basket and blending the onset (beginning sound) that is on the card to the rimes (word chunks) that are on the Easter Baskets on his or her Basket Game Board. The Easter Egg onset cards can be placed on any Basket that has a rime that can be made into a word. The winner is the first student to fill the Easter Baskets on his or her gameboard with Easter Eggs. This activity can grow with your students at various levels of blending onsets and rimes. I have a Level 2 Version that you can find in my products listings. It can be added to set one gradually to make the activity more difficult and differentiate students’ practice.

Another Way to Play – Real or Nonsense
Students pick an onset Easter Egg card and see which words they can create with one gameboard. They record the real words in the first column and the nonsense words in the second column. I have included 4 Easter themed recording sheets set up for this activity.
Please take a look at my other Easter activities as well as spring learning centers for math, sight words and more themed around baseball, spring and fishing. Thank you.
