Let the hunt begin! I have given you 3 sets of Easter eggs: one set with notes on the staff; one set with an empty staff; one set of blank eggs. All eggs are color coordinated with the Boomwhacker colors. There are several different options for the Easter Egg Note Hunt, depending on the ability level of your students and whether you want to use it for practice, review or assessment.
Option 1: (Once you have your eggs cut out and laminated – naturally making as many copies as needed for your classroom) “Hide” the eggs around your classroom and while a song is being played or sung have them find the eggs and come back to their seat – a great song for this activity would be “Hunting Easter Eggs” from the Music K-8 March/April 2006 volume. Once the song is over, each student must identify the notes he/she has collected or must play them on the xylophone (or whatever instrument you have available) at the front of the classroom.
Option 2: Have the students play the notes on the instrument as the eggs are found. There could either be an instrument at the front of the classroom or have several instruments set up around the room as “collection stations” where the eggs are turned in (played).
Option 3: On the empty staff eggs, write multiple notes that must be played; numbering all the eggs of the same color in sequence to reveal a tune. The students must then guess the name of the tune.
Option 4: The blank eggs are for you to get creative with! You can use them to make your own set of eggs with music symbols, rhythms, add rests to the mix, dynamics, etc., or throw them into the mix with the options above as a wild card. The sky is the limit!
There are certainly many more options that you may come up with or you may wish to combine elements of the options mentioned. Use your imagination! If you think of another great idea, share it with us! I hope your students enjoy hunting their eggs and making music!
