This activity serves to engage students in reflecting on the events that occurred on Easter Island. While this handout was designed for an environmental science course, it can be used in other subject areas, including other science courses, social studies, and language arts.
There are multiple ways this assignment can be utilized in a lesson:
(1) As a follow up to watching a video clip or reading about Easter Island
(2) Foundation for small group or in-class discussion
(3) Homework assignment (can be completed individually, in pairs, or in small groups)
The majority of the handout focuses on students reflecting on the events of Easter Island, in addition to having them focus on applying what they learned to current world issues. In addition, there is a portion of the handout devoted to students researching one alternative technology from a list that they can learn about and respond to prompts to show how this method could be used to support a more sustainable society.
