This is a fun and engaging experiment for studying plants. Also fun for a spring/Easter science activity!
Need: white carnations, cups or test tubes, and food coloring.
Read aloud or have students read The Case of the Fading Flowers. This is about a detective who is called to the home of two children. These two kids disagree on whether a cut carnation flower will still be able to "drink" water. Students are asked to complete an experiment for themselves and decide who to believe. They record their findings on an observation sheet which is provided. Teachers also do the experiment only modified a bit by cutting the stem and sticking one side in water colored red and another in water colored blue. Students are able to record observations about their own flower in one color and the teacher's flower in two colors.
