Why is Social Studies important? It's important because it teaches citizenship. Students need to learn what rights they have as citizens, and how they can exercise those rights. In this assignment students connect an image and a generalization about the role of citizens in our democracy. They then write a brief response stating the connection.
This document can work in one of three ways:
It can be an activator to get students to think about what the role of a citizen is.
It can be the center part of a lesson to engage students on discourse about citizenship.
It can be an easy assessment at the end of a discussion about citizenship.
Whichever way you choose to use it, just remember: Social Studies builds citizens, and that's why the subject is important.
