The four steps of analyzing poetry is a straight-forward poetry analysis method, perfect for students who are reluctant to read and discuss poetry. Teach the four steps with the PowerPoint, while students take notes in the first column of the chart.
Then analyze a poem together as a class using the second column. The third column is for students to analyze a poem together in pairs. Use the second handout to assign students poems to analyze on their own. This scaffold-ed approach ensures that students understand how to analyze poetry using the four steps before attempting it on their own.
