I use the Daily 5 and C.A.F.E. models in my classroom where I give my students the tools they need to succeed. Within these, I teach my students how to become independent readers and writers. In doing so, students also need to independently recognize when they make a reading error and how to fix it. I have used these 3 simple questions to help them recognize if they made an error, and it usually helps them self-correct the error.
You can hang them in your classroom or shrink them down and put them on word rings so students can have them at all times.
- Does it make sense? (meaning error)
- Does it sound right? (structural error)
- Does it look right? (visual error)
