Word searches are a fun, engaging way to develop vocabulary. They make great cooperative learning activities or reading centers when doing rotations (or individual assessments.)
In my years as a primary teacher, and Reading Specialist, I have found that traditional word searches that go backwards or diagonally, cause my ELL's and remedial students a great deal of difficulty. So, these word searches have each word listed twice, once horizontally and once vertically.
For the fun of it, I have hidden sight words or rhyming words within the puzzle. I challenge those students that finish early to "see what other words they can find. " Students love to be given 2 colored pencils, one to highlight the vocabulary words and one to highlight the hidden words. Have fun!
