These are recipes for making eatable rocks; basically cookies or bars that resemble the three types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Kids love to cook and tying this hands on activity to a science unit makes it more fun. The recipes can be made in class and either baked/refrigerated at school if there are means to do that, or the teacher can bake or cool at home and bring back to school. These cooked "rocks" can be a topic for discussion to enhance the learning of scientific concepts. For instance, layering the ingredients for the sedimentary "rocks" can be compared to the layers of sediment that pile up and compress and make the actual rocks in nature. Cooking is fun for kids!
