The chapters are grouped together into 18 different sections. There are learning targets for each section and comprehension questions that are aligned to CCSS. There is an answer key for the comprehension questions. Each section also has 1-2 writing prompts and suggested vocabulary for students to practice using context clues to determine the meaning of words.
This unit also includes a vocabulary graphic organizer for students to record the words, a figurative language chart, a character analysis assignment, and an ongoing assignment of naming each chapter.
The book is historical fiction. Therefore, I believe that students will understand it better if they have some background knowledge about World War II. I have included two brief informational texts for students to read and answer questions. This isn't a thorough explanation of WWII. It only includes very basic information to build their background knowledge.
I truly enjoyed this book and I hope you and your students do as well!
