The worksheet includes instructions for students to navigate through the website and answer questions as they run the simulations.
The simulation has students complete a background reading about realized vs. fundamental ecological niches, inter-tidal zones and basic barnacle biology. Students then use this new information along with previous knowledge about population biology to toggle different factors in the simulation. Using the worksheet, students are instructed to try toggling different factors like manipulating populations, sea level and tide changes. As they watch the simulation, they will answer questions on the worksheet that asks them to explain what they observe using ecological principles.
