This guided inquiry activity involves the student in a study of the growth rate in a rabbit population. The student assumes the role of scientist to determine the birth rate, mortality rate, growth rate and total population size of the rabbit population over a 20 year period. The data is plotted on a graph where the student will clearly see the initial exponential growth of the population followed by logistic growth. The activity will reinforce the concepts of exponential growth, logistic growth and carrying capacity. Follow up questions are though provoking and will strengthen critical thinking skills.

Given a set of basic premises about a reproducing rabbit population, students will calculate the percent increase / decrease of the population over a 20 year period, and calculate the total size of the rabbit population at the end of each year. (Don’t worry: Step by step instructions are provided to guide your students through these calculations.) Students will graph their data, then answer a set of problem-solving and critical-thinking questions about their results.
