Connection Card Strategy:
This learning strategy requires students make connections between various topics/vocabulary. Students truly begin to understand, comprehend, and remember vocabulary when they make connections to other words, content, and situations. This higher order thinking strategy also requires students to speak using academic vocabulary, which is a key component in helping English Language Learners comprehend science content as well as learn the English language. This strategy is an extremely effective vocabulary activity for all learners.
This particular connection card activity requires students to make connections between various terms related to ecology, food webs, and/or food chains. Students should have a basic understand of food webs and trophic levels and the various term associated with them before they begin this activity. Students will draw to cards analyze the terms and then make connections between them. They will use academic vocabulary to explain the connection verbally to their group. This activity is aimed at helping students reach a higher level of understanding when it comes to ecological terms.
