PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a set of 52 enrichment, reinforcement and review task cards for your lessons on population ecology. Students will answer questions about dispersion patterns, population growth and the limiting factors that affect populations. Students will use their critical thinking skills to analyze graphs showing exponential and logistic growth, and make predictions about population size and growth under various conditions. Students will explore density-depenedent and density-independent factors, carrying capacity, and age structure diagrams.

Suitable for life science and biology students in grades 8 -12.

Task cards are a fantastic way to enrich or reinforce lessons, review difficult concepts, or provide extra practice for the struggling student. The student reads each card, performs the task, and records his/her answer on the included student answer sheet.

From the moment of purchase, you will be ready to use your task cards in just a few minutes. Simply print the sheets of task cards on card stock paper, laminate, and cut the cards apart. The cards look best when printed in color, but they can easily be printed in black and white.

This set of 52 task cards on population ecology covers the following concepts and topics:
• Characteristics of Populations: Definition of population, population size, geographic distribution, density, dispersion, growth rate, and age structure.
• Types of Dispersion: Clumped, even, and random, definitions and examples are given.
• Population Dynamics: Birth rate, death rate, life expectancy, age structure.
• Patterns of mortality: Survivorship Curves, the three types are defined and explained, examples given.
• Life Histories: Big-bang reproduction and repeated reproduction
• Population Growth: Growth rate, factors that determine the size of a population, migration, density, exponential growth, carrying capacity, limits to population growth, graphs of different types of population growth, logistic growth, assumptions of the exponential model and the logistic model.
• Carrying capacity and Logistic growth.
• Limits to Growth: Limiting factors, examples of limiting factors, density-dependent factors, competition, predation, parasitism, disease, territoriality, density independent factors.
• Human Population Growth: The history of human population growth, current human population growth, demographic transition, age-structure diagrams.
