Product Description
Using A New Coat for Anna by Harriet Ziefert students will discover important economic concepts such as goods, services, producers, consumers, bartering, economic choice, scarcity, and economic resources. After reading students will create their own lap books to demonstrate their understanding of important economic vocabulary.

The lab book will look like coat on the outside, using a red file folder. Then students will make pockets to hold the definition and examples of goods and services on the right inside flap. On the left inside flap students will have examples of producers and consumers along with definitions for each. In the middle of the lap book are four examples of bartering that took place in the story along with two definitions and book examples of economic choice and scarcity. The back of the lap book has a sorting mat with definition of human, capital, and natural resources to sort twelve resources shown in the book. Students store these picture examples in a pocket on the back so they can continue to practice sorting resources.

VA SOL Economics:
1.7 The student will explain the difference between goods and services and describe how people are consumers and producers of goods and services.
1.8 The student will explain that people make choices because they cannot have everything they want.

2.8 The student will describe natural resources (water, soil, wood, and coal), human resources (people at work), and capital resources (machines, tools, and buildings).
2.9 The student will distinguish between the use of barter and the use of money in the exchange for goods and services.
2.10 The student will explain that scarcity (limited resources) requires people to make choices about producing and consuming goods and services.

3.8 The student will demonstrate an understanding of different cultures and the natural, human, and capital resources they used in the production of goods and services.
3.10 The student will identify examples of making an economic choice and will explain the idea of opportunity cost (what is given up when making a choice).
