This is a Microeconomics Personal Annual Budget Project designed for high school students and focuses on providing real-world economic problem solving activities through the development of a personal annual budget. Many of my students found it to be a real eye-opener upon completion. The handout comprises the first ten pages, along with a project overview provided on page 11. The project can be assigned in sections over a semester and serves as a portfolio component for the semester exam as well. The budget project begins with the student being placed in a typical scenario and includes research requirements for determining the costs for rent, rental insurance, transportation payments, auto insurance, utilities, childcare, groceries, furniture and miscellaneous costs. It's all in there, with a final summation page to calculate annual costs for all items. There's even a page for students to record section deadlines as well as a rubric for the overall project requirements. This project-based learning activity is loaded with real-world applications that students can relate to.
