The Real Life Simulation project is a great project at the end of a quarter for any Social Studies class. Using the standards of Economics and Personal Financial Literacy of Ohio, students step by step learn what it takes to survive financially in the real world. From my experience students love this project and have loads of fun completing it. The project is a learning experience for all involved, but most importantly allows freedom and creativity of each student to thrive.

In this project each student use the concepts and terminology learned from the past units covering the topics of personal finance and consumerism. Students will be receiving a “reality check” and throughout the simulation get a real understanding of what it takes to survive on their own in the real world. As the project progresses students will engage in group discussion, make important decisions affecting them personally, and use their critical thinking skills to solve the problems that life throws at them.

Upon completion of this project, students are required to turn in a formal final assessment report. In this report each student assesses his or her growth throughout the project. The report included: education level achieved, job application/interview score sheet, occupation with original list salary compared to real salary, final budget, monthly salary breakdown, car payment, rent/mortgage payment, insurance payment, and any savings accumulated. Lastly, on a separate sheet of paper, each student will write a personal reflection outlining how he or she could use the newly acquired materials and concepts in real life settings. Students will be challenged to thoroughly investigate their financial futures and apply knowledge gained today to their decisions of tomorrow.

This project is based on the progression of tasks. Students that are not in regular attendance will not complete the project on time or finish all the steps required. Each task given will be given due dates that each student is responsible for knowing. Simply put, DO NOT MISS A SINGLE DAY DURING THIS PROJECT!!!!!!! Missed days will only hurt your project’s overall grade.
