This simulation is my students' FAVORITE activity of the year in Economics. In small groups, students form corporations (handout included), take them public in Initial Public Offerings (stock certificates included for copying), draw random market events from a basket (event lists included), buy and sell stock from each other using play money in one-minute rounds (portfolio handout included), and track what happens to stock prices. This stock market activity can last a week, or less, or more ("expansion pack" activities included). I use this from AP to my lowest level classes. Step-by-step instructions with photos, materials needed, and preparation for each day are included. Also included: suggestions for excellent clips from Investopedia.com and ABC's hit show Shark Tank, information about corporations as people under the law, and question-and-answer handouts (with keys) to ensure that students understand all aspects of the simulation. I use this before we do an online stock portfolio competition using MarketWatch.com, and so students really understand the process.
