We've used this project many times in our 12th grade Economics courses. It is part of a series of projects I call "What Things Cost". This project asks the students to shop for a pet. All shopping and research is done online. The entire project can be done in a computer lab in one 50 minute class period - or as a homework activity. Their research is concluded with a short written summary of what they have discovered with connections to our core economics concepts. The project is designed to give the students the freedom to choose any pet - and then to direct them through the costs associated with the proper care of this pet. I have also designed a "Follow Up" classroom activity to be used on the day this project is turned in. The Follow Up activity allows the students to chat with classmates about their pet project discoveries. Please let me know if you would like this project and I'll post the Follow Up activity too.
Hope you enjoy the project. Please let me know. Dennis Equitz, Troy High School, Fullerton, California
