This project has students create a graphic novel based on the day in the life of either a biotic (living) or abiotic (non-living – rock) factor that lives there. The story needs to have a plot and the climax must demonstrate the biggest environmental threat of the ecosystem and show how that threat will affect the future of the biome.
I start off the unit by playing Biome Balderdash, then watching the BBC video Planet Earth from Pole to Pole. While watching this video we discuss what a biome is and the different biomes they can choose from.
The students then do research to gather the facts required to build their story from. I use a plot graph and storyboard so they can map out how their story will flow. In the past we have used Comic Life, Kidpix or Frames 4 on our school computers but there are other online options that could be used such as, www.xtranormal.com or www.bitstrips.com. As an alternative, students could do a paper copy of their story that could be scanned onto computers when complete.

I use it with my grade 7 science and geography classes but this project can easily be simplified for younger grades. This is a keynotes version of the project but there is also a powerpoint version available.
