The focus of this activity is to push students to evaluate statements and consider what results occurred as a result of the removal of the Grey Wolves in the 1920’s. This activity gives students a chance to engage in critical thinking and simulate the type of cognitive processing required on STAAR.
Science TEKS 5.9A Student Activity:
Students are to categorize all 24 cards as either true or not true (occurred/did not occur) based on whether or not these interactions occurred with the removal of the Grey Wolf in Yellowstone National Park (YNP). Use the PBS video provided - https://klrn.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/a58e3ca2-52ab-45f5-87ac-26ee0d681146/wolves-of-yellowstone-earth-a-new-wild/
Science TEKS 5.9B Student Activity:
Students identify a food chain with the given cards. They construct the food chain and share out with two other students in a walk-about (students are given 1:30 minutes to share with two different people NOT at their table)
Science TEKS 5.9C Student Activity:
Students identify an organism from the cards and predict what type of affect its removal or overpopulation will have on the ecosystem. Students describe the resulting ecosystem and how other organisms will be impacted by the change.
Science TEKS 5.10A Student Activity – use organisms from YNP to identify structures that help them thrive in the environment (i.e. beavers vs. otters, foxes vs. wolves vs. coyotes, rabbits vs mice, etc)
