Teacher favorite! Three high interest ecology readings for middle school students!
These NGSS-aligned readings provide real-life and engaging examples to support the comprehension of NGSS MS-LS2-2. This document contains three middle school-level readings, one of each about the types of interactions between living things, including mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. Each reading is straightforward and appropriate for a wide range of readers at the middle school level. The readings each give 7+ specific and interesting examples of pairs of organisms who exhibit each type of symbiosis, including some pictures for reference. Each individual reading is 2 pages (front/back of one page), and there is also a corresponding 2 page (1 page front/back) graphic organizer.
There are many ways to incorporate these readings. The graphic organizer included is for students to track the organism names and relationship types, and give a summary of the relationship. You might also use the readings with your favorite reading strategy - herringbone, chunking the text, etc. It could also be used in a group activity, where groups read just one of the readings and present the information to the whole class orally or in a poster.
