PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This 95-page packet includes all you need to teach a complete Ecosystems Unit of Study. This packet is broken up into different sections. Each section has a suggested lesson plan that includes a little bit of background information on the key topics. Also included are slides that you can display on your overhead that will accompany a science discussion and will make it easier for students to take notes in their science journals. {Note: This packet is very similar in format to my Properties of Matter packet.} The following key topics are covered throughout this unit:

- Biomes {7 biomes are covered, including Rainforest,
Deciduous Forest, Tundra, Desert, Savannah, and Mountains)
- Ecosystems, including key terms such as community and
population
- Biotic/Abiotic
- Interdependence – Food Chains and Food Webs
- Symbiotic Relationships (Commensalism, Mutualism, and
Parasitism)
- Animal Adaptations
- Ecosystem Imbalance

Included in the packet are 10 activities to help your students practice with key concepts:

- Exit Slips
- Class Food Web Activity with Critter Cards
- EcoSquare Activity – an outdoor activity that has students
going face to face with ecosystems in their own backyards
- Symbiotic Sort – a game to practice with symbiotic
relationships
- POP QUIZ! See where your students are mid-way through the
unit with this pop quiz. Answer key included.
- Butterfly Blend – an animal adaption activity
- Ecosystem Imbalance Scenario Task Cards
- Vocab Match-Up – a memory game to practice with the
vocabulary words throughout the unit
- Culminating Activity – Ecosystem Encyclopedia Project
(complete with directions, a student checklist, and a grading
rubric)
- Cumulative Unit Test - with answer key

BONUS MATERIAL! I have also included directions on how to create an EcoColumn (a terrarium and an aquarium that is joined together). I have also included a12-page project packet that will help students record observations and make connections throughout the project. I HIGHLY recommend doing this project at the beginning of the unit. It’s very engaging and students can see firsthand how ecosystems work together.

{PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS BEFORE PURCHASING!! Please understand that this bonus project would include the purchase (or gathering) of living critters in order to be successful. I do understand that a project like this can be expensive and not all teachers will have the funds to do this. THEREFORE, I wanted to include this material as a BONUS - in addition to the other activities in the packet. The pricing of this packet was based on the first 80 pages of the unit – I did not take this EcoColumn section into consideration when I priced it.}

Please also note that the other sections of this packet have no basis on the EcoColumn project and is a complete unit on its own. I want to reiterate that the EcoColumn project is just a bonus.

This is my second favorite unit to teach - my first is Properties of Matter :) . I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
