Product Description
Does your uppergrades' curriculum include Ecosystems and Organisms? If so, I hope this Ecosystems project-based learning unit is just what you are looking for! I created this set of research/notebook pages because nothing I found when searching for “animal research projects” really fit my needs for upper elementary students and our curriculum. These materials provide students with lots of opportunities to illustrate and create diagrams (as well as record factual information and details about habitats, ecosystems, and organisms).

In the research booklet pages, you will find a focus on habitats, ecosystems, biomes, adaptations, and developing an in-depth understanding of a specific consumer/organism (consumer/animal research project). Contains 23+ notebooking pages.

I have also included 19 pages of “starter” materials for a possible project-based learning unit where students create a mobile museum based on their research projects. Materials include details and steps for implementing this research project as a project-based unit, example project pictures, driving questions, a letter from the "museum" for launching the project, close-reading comprehension questions, lists of organisms to research in each biome, a written student reflection, and a rubric.

*Download the preview for full details on how I use the notebook sheets for lessons, research booklets, and to implement project-based learning. Students can turn their information into a research paper and slideshow, and you can implement project-based learning with these materials.

Topics Include:
Abiotic/Biotic Factors
Food Chain and Food Web
Organism Niche (carnivore, omnivore, herbivore)
Adaptations (Physical and Behavioral)
Comparing Organisms
Interactions between Organisms (symbiosis-parasitism, commensalism, mutualism)
Human Interaction (positive and negative effects)
Changes affecting organisms and habitats over time

Also includes: suggested links to websites for student research

Aligned with NC Essential Standards Ecosystems
4th: 4L1: Understand the effects of environmental changes, adaptations and behaviors that enable animals (including humans) to survive in changing habitats.
4L1.1 Give examples of changes in an organism’s environment that
are beneficial to it and some that are harmful
4L1.2 Explain how animals meet their needs by using behaviors in
response to information received from the environment.
4L1.3 Explain how differences among animals of the same
population sometimes give individuals an advantage in surviving and reproducing in changing habitats.

5th: 5L2 Understand the interdependence of plants and animals with their ecosystem.
5L2.1 Compare the characteristics of several common ecosystems, including estuaries and salt marshes, oceans, lakes and ponds, forests, and grasslands.
5L2.1 Classify the organisms within an ecosystem according to the function they serve: producers, consumers, or decomposers
(biotic factors).
5L2.3 Infer the effects that may result from the interconnected
relationship of plants and animals to their ecosystem.
