California’s Ed Roberts Day, is on his birthday, Jan. 23rd, every year. This was voted for unanimously by the California legislature. Plus there is a full explanation of Ed Roberts Day as voted on by the U.S. House of Representatives in a 390--8 vote. This is an online PDF here by itself and in my Ed Roberts biography..
Ed Roberts worked very deliberately and consciously on behalf of all disabled people. So the day is a day for all disabled people, not just a few and not just Ed.
Any teacher wanting to teach positively about disability will find material in the life of Ed Roberts. In the 23 states where there is a disability history and awareness week or month, there is a time designated, usually by an overwhelming vote of the state legislature, to do this.
Centers for independent living for disabled people anywhere in the world have a reason to celebrate Ed Roberts Day. Ed cofounded the first center for independent living in the world. Ideas can be found throughout the piece to discuss Ed and his day.
