This unit on Romanticism contains 3 Power Points and 6 handouts. Lesson plans aligned to Common Core are also included.
Students will view an 11 slide Power Point to enable them to understand what caused the shift in ideas from the Age of Reason to Romanticism.
Students will be introduced to Edgar Allan Poe and will understand how his literary accomplishments have influenced pop music today. Students will also be able to compare Poe’s poetry to music artists Michael Jackson and Kelly Clarkson. The YouTube urls have been provided so students can view both songs-“Thriller” and “Because of You.”
Being able to hear and see Poe’s influence will allow students to make a real life connection to one of the greatest and most influential poets in American history.
Students will also read Washington Irving’s “The Devil and Tom” and participate in literature circles.
There is a final project included in which students will be divided into groups and create a PowerPoint on Poe and a modern song of today. I always enjoy student presentations!
Lastly, students will have an indivudal essay in which they compare Irving’s short story to one of Poe’s.
Again, daily lesson plans are included as well as a unit test. Enjoy!
